Potato Gnocchi with Shrimp & Squid

Some months in life are beautifully chaotic—and this one, sandwiched between moving house and crashing at friends’ places, proved that my kitchen soul simply cannot be dimmed. 😂

Living with Real Neapolitans

When you’re staying with a proper Neapolitan family, the daily greetings go beyond just “Buongiorno” and “Buonasera.” What really matters is the question that gets asked with genuine hand-rubbing enthusiasm: “Cosa mangiamo oggi?” What are we eating today?

It was a Friday evening when my friend’s father—Adele’s father-in-law—casually mentioned a dish from his memory: a seafood pasta he hadn’t made in decades. It was all the rage back in the 1980s, he said. Gnocchi di patate con gamberi, seppie e pomodorini. Hand-rolled potato gnocchi paired with fresh shrimp, squid, and sweet cherry tomatoes.

You know that look in an Italian’s eyes when they’re remembering good food? That’s when I knew we were doing this.

A Saturday Team Effort

Saturday morning arrived with a mission. Everyone got a job: someone was on potato duty, another headed to find the best shrimp, and I rolled up my sleeves to make the gnocchi from scratch. The kind where you have to feel the dough with your hands, where you know it’s right when it’s just the perfect texture—not sticky, not dry.

By 1:30 PM, we were sitting down. The table was set. The anticipation was real.

That First Bite

This dish was my first time eating it too, and—wow. 😲

The pillowy softness of the potato gnocchi was absolute perfection paired with the sweet brininess of the shrimp. Each bite was tender and delicate, with that fresh-from-the-sea flavor that only happens when the ingredients are treated with respect. And then the squid—those chewy, perfectly cooked strips added this beautiful textural contrast, layer upon layer of flavors.

And then? There was nothing left. Everything was gone. 😂👍

This is the kind of meal that reminds you why food matters. It’s not just about hunger; it’s about memory, family, and the simple joy of eating something beautiful together.

I translate flavors, habits, and identities between two worlds that rarely meet—but deeply resonate when they do. This space is where those worlds collide. And occasionally, where they argue.
