Pasta e Patate: My Aunt’s Neapolitan Magic
The countdown to Christmas has officially begun, and my kitchen is already buzzing with festive energy. But honestly? The best part of December isn’t the holiday prep—it’s having my aunt living right next door.
I may or may not be turning into an “auntie’s girl” at this point. She’s the kind of neighbor you dream about when you’re living abroad—the kind who always has something delicious happening in her kitchen, and who doesn’t mind when you casually invite yourself over for lunch. Her pantry is basically my pantry now, and I’m not complaining.
When Good Ingredients Meet Good Company
Right now, my own kitchen is lined with treasures: homemade orange jam from our own sweet oranges, a jar of those incredible Neapolitan pepperoncini that are absolutely life-changing when paired with fried salted cod, and a bottle of my friend’s cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. But the real star? That’s waiting at my aunt’s place.
This morning, I’m heading over for lunch to eat her Pasta e Patate alla Napoletana—and honestly, if you’ve never had this dish, you’re missing out on one of Naples’ best-kept secrets. It’s the kind of food that proves you don’t need fancy ingredients or complicated techniques to create something extraordinary.
Simple, Creamy, Unforgettable
Pasta e Patate is essentially the Italian answer to mac and cheese, except it’s so much more sophisticated and so much more delicious. Potatoes and pasta cook together in a rich, creamy broth, creating this impossibly silky texture that coats every strand and every piece. It’s the definition of comfort food—the kind of dish that tastes like home, like family, like sitting around a table with people you love.
What makes it truly Neapolitan? The technique, the proportions, and most importantly, the quality of your ingredients. My aunt uses good olive oil, fresh garlic, and lets everything cook low and slow until it becomes something greater than the sum of its parts.
The Perfect Italian Ending
And of course, after a bowl of this creamy pasta goodness, there’s only one proper way to finish: a proper espresso. Sharp, intense, and the perfect punctuation mark to a meal.
Being neighbors with my aunt might be the best culinary decision I never made. But I’m definitely not complaining. 😄
