Sunday Mussel Soup: A Labor of Love

Sunday Mussel Soup Day

Some dishes are just work—and you can tell from a single glance at the photo. But there’s something deeply satisfying about committing to one of those labor-intensive recipes, especially when you’ve got backup. This Sunday, I convinced my mum to come help, and I may have conveniently “forgotten” to mention that three kilos of mussels needed washing. Oops! But honestly? Having her there cut the workload in half, and that made all the difference.

What Goes Into This Soup

We’re talking serious quantities here: three kilos of cozze (those plump Adriatic mussels), one kilo of littleneck clams split between vongole and lupini, four octopus tentacles, and a generous handful of fresh shrimp. This isn’t the kind of soup you’d normally make on a whim—it’s the kind that only truly makes sense at home, where you can go as extravagant as you want without worrying about restaurant pricing.

The whole thing comes together in a big, bubbling pot, each shellfish releasing its brininess into a broth that tastes like the sea itself. Every piece of seafood adds its own flavor, layering complexity that no single ingredient could achieve alone.

The Best Part

Three of us hunched over our bowls, heads down, completely absorbed. The kind of eating that needs no conversation—just focused, joyful consumption. And then came the finale: a thick slice of focaccia, used to swipe the bowl clean of every precious drop of that golden, seafood-kissed broth. Not a hint of liquid left behind.

Is there a more perfect way to spend a Sunday? I genuinely don’t think so.

I translate flavors, habits, and identities between two worlds that rarely meet—but deeply resonate when they do. This space is where those worlds collide. And occasionally, where they argue.
