Candied Orange Peel: A Winter Citrus Treasure
There’s something magical about opening your door to friends bearing gifts from their mountain garden. A few days ago, that’s exactly what happened when my friend from Roccarainola—a region absolutely blessed with incredible produce—arrived with jars of homemade honey, their own olive oil, and bags overflowing with sweet oranges and mandarins.
The moment those citrus fruits landed in my woven basket, the entire kitchen filled with this bright, clean orange scent. You know that feeling when a aroma just lifts your mood instantly? That’s what this was. I immediately knew: these beauties weren’t just for juice.
Orange Peel Magic
Honestly, over the years, I’ve turned Italian winter citrus into so many different things that it’s basically become a household tradition at this point. I’ve made orange marmalade, chocolate-orange candies, and everything in between. But candied orange peel? That’s the one I come back to again and again.
There’s something about the bittersweet balance, the glossy jewel-like appearance, and the way it transforms something you’d normally toss in the compost into something genuinely special. Plus, it’s the kind of thing that makes an incredible homemade gift—way more thoughtful than anything store-bought.
How to Make It
The process is surprisingly straightforward, though it does require patience. You’re essentially cooking the orange peels in sugar syrup until they become translucent and tender, then drying them out until they’re perfect little candies. I’ve made a detailed video walking through every step, which I’ve linked below if you want to follow along.
The beauty of candied orange peel is its versatility. Chop it up and fold it into chocolate, stir it into yogurt, add it to cakes, or just enjoy it on its own as a palate cleanser. I sometimes dip half of it in dark chocolate for a more indulgent version.
Other Orange Transformations
If you’re on an orange kick like I am right now, I’ve also shared recipes for orange marmalade and chocolate-orange preserves in my video archive. Each one captures that winter citrus moment in a different way.
