Candied Orange Peel: My Italian Winter Obsession

You know that moment when your friends hook you up with something so good, you immediately start scheming? That’s where I’m at right now with orange season.

Through two separate friends, I scored two batches of absolutely gorgeous organic Italian winter oranges. The kind that make you wonder how supermarket citrus ever became acceptable. Instead of eating them fresh (though I definitely did some of that), I did what any slightly obsessed food person would do: I turned them into candied peel.

Years of Playing with Candied Everything

I’ve been running this candied fruit series for a few years now, and honestly? I’ve dialed it in. The technique, the timing, the exact balance of sugar and patience—I know it backwards and forwards. Give me quality fruit, and I can guarantee you something that hits that Italian sweet spot: si scioglie in bocca, that melt-on-your-tongue moment that makes you close your eyes.

The process takes about ten days from start to finish, and it’s become one of my favorite kitchen projects. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching those sticky, glossy strips develop their candied coat.

Two Recipes, Both Worth Your Time

I’ve made two versions this year:

The straight candied orange peel—this is the classic, the one you nibble on with coffee or toss into chocolate. Clean, bright, unapologetically delicious.

Dark chocolate orange preserve—because sometimes orange peel wants to get fancy. The chocolate adds this sophisticated depth that makes it feel almost luxurious.

Both recipes are fully detailed in my video tutorials (links above), with every step broken down so you can actually follow along in your own kitchen.

Strategic Orange Negotiations

Here’s where it gets funny. My friends and I have already started our negotiations for next year.

“Your oranges next winter? Yeah, those are mine now,” I told one friend.

“And you’re promising me that batch of dark chocolate orange preserves,” said the other.

So technically… whose oranges are these exactly? The beautiful chaos of having obsessive friends with fruit trees.

If you’ve got decent citrus on hand and ten days of patience, I’d genuinely encourage you to try this. It’s one of those projects that looks intimidating but absolutely isn’t, and the payoff is something store-bought can’t touch.

I translate flavors, habits, and identities between two worlds that rarely meet—but deeply resonate when they do. This space is where those worlds collide. And occasionally, where they argue.
